Tradition and a vision of the future

Grupo Planeta is the leading Spanish communication group with wholly family-owned capital and a producer of cultural, news, educational and entertainment contents for the Spanish and French-speaking markets. It is the foremost publishing group in Spain and Latin America, the second in France, and ranks among the main leaders in publishing in Europe. It is also one of the great Spanish media groups, owing to its participation as a shareholder of reference in television, radio, press and the Internet.

Founded in Barcelona in 1949 following the creation of Editorial Planeta and the promotion of direct sales of major encyclopaedic works, Grupo Planeta quickly became consolidated as a prestige brand with a capacity for combining tradition and a forward-looking approach. In 1966 it opened its first subsidiaries in Colombia and Mexico, marking what would be a constant part of its activity: an uninterrupted presence in Latin America.

From its leading position in the publishing sector, with its gradual incorporation of the most prominent publishing labels in the Spanish-speaking market, it has launched into new business areas, new products, new formats and new markets.

Today, Grupo Planeta is present in twenty-five countries and has a potential public of seven-hundred million people for its works published in Spanish, French, Portuguese and Catalan. Boasts over 70 publishing labels, that publish works by including the most outstanding writers of classical and contemporary literature. It is also leader in the commercialisation of major encyclopaedic works and in sales by instalments. In the communication sphere it is a reference shareholder in major Spanish media outlets in the spheres of television (Antena 3 TV, AntenaNeox and AntenaNova), radio (Onda Cero and Europa FM) and press (La Razón, ADN and Avui). Furthermore, it has positioned itself as a reference point in the vocational training sector while in the sphere of new technologies it has begun an offensive in the fields of electronic commerce and mobile telephone contents distribution.

One of Grupo Planeta's main characteristics is its capacity for innovation in the world of business. Since it was founded, it has introduced new forms of understanding the publishing, promotion and commercialisation of contents. These contributions began in the publishing sector and have been extended to new formats for contents distribution. Planeta contents were the first to be presented in multimedia format and now they are on the Internet and digital and interactive TV. This achievement is the product of the Group's professional staff; they have ably maintained a strategic attitude beyond their own sphere of specialisation and this has put Planeta in a privileged position in the worldwide market.

Grupo Planeta's philosophy is based on a series of principles revolving around people, ethics, quality and work excellence. We invite you to take a look at our corporate principles.
