Austral

Pocket-size culture

Austral came into existence in 1937, led by the hand of the publisher Espasa, with the publication of its first volume, La rebelión de las masas, by José Ortega y Gasset. Thus began the first pocket collection in the Spanish language and today Austral is a Grupo Planeta imprint that is fuelled by the most universal and authentic backlist of all time.

An extremely rich publishing collection built up since the company was founded, where readers will find all the classics of universal literature, with a special focus on Spanish and Spanish-American authors. Austral Clásica is structured into five series (Narrative, Theatre, Poetry, Sciences and Humanities) and covers literature from the Homeric age to pre-1927 authors. This collection pays special attention to young people becoming acquainted with these authors for the first time, providing them with support for their reading through introductions and guides written by top specialists. In turn, Austral Contemporánea covers all the authors of the highest literary standing and titles considered true contemporary classics. And in 2012 this imprint launched Austral Básicos, featuring essential classic titles at a very affordable price.
